First, Core i7 does not mean a seven-core processor! These are just names to indicate relative performance.
Most of the i7 Extreme computers have four cores. However, there are a few models that have six. These models also have larger caches. If your processor isn't listed as an i7 Extreme but just says i7, it's likely a quad-core with slightly slower clock speed and smaller caches than the Extremes.

We don't usually recommend any Core i9 for gaming. These are CPUs with over 24 cores that are built with high multithreading activities that will require the use of almost all the cores. Due to the way games are built, they don't tend to use multiple cores, so gaming becomes an intense low-core count activity.
If you only plan on using the PC for gaming, then an i5 processor will be just fine. However, if you also plan on using the PC for other things like video editing or streaming, then an i7 processor would be a better choice. The reason being is that the i7 processors are better at handling more strenuous tasks.
