Tablets and smartphones range between 2 to 1000 nits. A mobile device becomes readable outdoors when it gets to 1,000 nits. Anything above 500 nits is good to use on a sunny day. Monitors and laptops range from 200 to 600+ nits.

Is 400 nits good for gaming

Mid-range gaming monitors can have a brightness of around 400-500 nits, while high-end gaming monitors can have a brightness of 600 nits or more. Some gaming monitors have even higher nits, such as those with a brightness of 1000 nits or more.

A higher rating means a brighter display. Displays for laptops and mobile devices are usually between 200 and 300 nits on average. A rating over 300 nits is solid and a rating above 500 nits is extremely good.

(Laptop screens are different, because they need to be viewable in different types of lighting, such as direct sunlight, so therefore benefit from higher brightness levels even without HDR support.)
