Tablets and smartphones range between 2 to 1000 nits. A mobile device becomes readable outdoors when it gets to 1,000 nits. Anything above 500 nits is good to use on a sunny day. Monitors and laptops range from 200 to 600+ nits.
Is 400 nits good for gaming
Mid-range gaming monitors can have a brightness of around 400-500 nits, while high-end gaming monitors can have a brightness of 600 nits or more. Some gaming monitors have even higher nits, such as those with a brightness of 1000 nits or more.
Is 400 nits better than 300 nits
A higher rating means a brighter display. Displays for laptops and mobile devices are usually between 200 and 300 nits on average. A rating over 300 nits is solid and a rating above 500 nits is extremely good.

It still needs a bright display, but it doesn't need to go as bright as it does on a smartphone. As such, a display of 200 to 600 nits will be good enough. We're not saying more brightness is bad, but it's not as necessary.

Is 400 nits good for HDR
Displays that support HDR should start at 400 nits peak — at the very least — and currently run as high as 1,600. (Laptop screens are different, because they need to be viewable in different types of lighting, such as direct sunlight, so therefore benefit from higher brightness levels even without HDR support.)
Is there a big difference between 300 and 400 nits
Or if you're using them outdoors. If you are to buy a laptop with a matte. Screen. You are fine to buy something that has 300 nits of brightness. Or a bob 250 nits of brightness.
